AmeriCorps Program
United Way of Saginaw County recently placed 24 AmeriCorps* members to serve in the field of substance use and abuse prevention. Members are currently volunteering at the following organizations:
- 13 at Prevention and Youth Services (PAYS)
- 3 at CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect) Council
- 2 at YMCA
- 3 at Lake Huron Area Council Boy Scouts of America
- 3 at United Way of Saginaw County
Goals - The goals of the Saginaw Substance Abuse Prevention Program are to:
- Reduce youth access to Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) through education and environmentally based ATOD prevention awareness activities.
- Educate parents on the importance of parental monitoring and clear rules of conduct within the family unit regarding ATOD use.
- Work to increase the age of onset of ATOD use.
- Educate the community regarding how social norms relate to ATOD in their community.
