Project Independence
Project Independence is a volunteer effort coordinated through United Way's labor liaison. This program donates, free of charge, mobility ramps for those in need. All materials, supplies and tools are furnished through grants applied for and received by United Way. Financial management is handled through SVRC Industries, Inc. All labor to build and install the ramps is provided by the following:
-
* Carpenters Local Union 706 - Apprenticeship and Training Program
-
* Ironworkers Local Union 25
-
* Sheet Metal Workers Local 7
-
* IBEW Local 557
-
* United Auto Workers
Thanks to our strong union supporters, more than 40 ramps have helped mobilize those in need over the past four years.
Twelve ramps are scheduled to be built on Saturday, September 25 during our annual blitz build.
The ramps are built as modules and, once no longer needed by the current recipient, will be transferred to someone on the waiting list. Collaborative efforts are beginning with Genesee and Bay Counties.
