Mobility ramps provided to people in need during United Way’s annual Blitz Build
An annual blitz build of mobility ramps will take place at 9 homes throughout Saginaw on Saturday, September 17.
Through Project Independence, a United Way of Saginaw County program, more than 120 labor and engineer volunteers will assemble mobility ramp modules to recipient houses during the annual build. Since the ramps are built as modules, by the Carpenter’s Apprenticeship and Training Program, they are able to be built prior to the build and can be transferred to a new home when the recipient is no longer in need.
The mobility ramps are donated, free of charge, to individuals thanks to grants and partnerships throughout the community. Local vendors provide food for the labor volunteers.
All labor to build and install the ramps is provided through the following: Nexteer Automotive engineer department, IBEW Local 557, Sheet Metal Workers Local 7, Ironworkers Local Union 25, Carpenters Local 706, Sequin Lumber Company and United Auto Workers Locals 699, 668, 467, 455 and 2275. Other key partners include SVRC Industries, Inc. and Citizens Bank.
“This program really displays the excellent partnerships between United Way of Saginaw County, labor volunteers and the Nexteer Automotive engineers,” said Steve Lamb, program coordinator. “Not only are we able to offer a service to others in need, that otherwise wouldn’t be available, we are able to show the community what great things can happen when the community partners together.”
Recipients are literally freed from their houses and individuals are able to return home from the hospital because of the service that this program provides. Project Independence is in its sixth year of making a positive impact in the community and after Saturday, will have helped more than 60 individuals and families.
