Project Independence

Providing the Freedom to Live a Healthy Life

Project Independence is a volunteer effort coordinated through United Way's Labor Liaison. This program donates free of charge mobility ramps for those in need. All materials, supplies and tools are furnished through grants applied for and received by United Way in partnership with SVRC Industries.

United Way hosts a blitz build every fall in which mobility ramps are assembled throughout the community. On average, 10-15 ramps are constructed by volunteers on an annual basis.  This program would not be possible without the support of our partners in LABOR, community volunteers and Nexteer Automotive engineers who provide free labor and graciously help to construct and install the mobility ramps.

While many of us take for granted the ability to move freely inside and outside of our homes...many of our recipients have never experienced that freedom.  With Project Independence, recipients are now able to come and go from their homes without assistance or barriers.  This new found freedom not only provide increased mobility and accessibility, it also dignity and independence.  United Way of Saginaw County is proud to support a community of inclusion and mobility for all.

Not only does this program provide a service to house seeking mobility assistance, it gives the families a part of their independence back.
